It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year again to begin preparing for the INMM Annual Meeting! We certainly hope you are planning to attend and making arrangements. The Technical Program Committee met in March in Austin, Texas, USA, to put together another compelling annual meeting. Additionally, we are in the final stages of arranging both our opening and closing plenary sessions that will be interactive, relevant and highly engaging. Please look for more information in the near future regarding these sessions and, as always, reach out to me or anyone on the Executive Committee or Technical Program Committee if you have ideas for future session to enhance your experience.
A few changes you will see on the periphery of the annual meeting will include a joint meeting of the Destructive Analysis and Non-Destructive Analysis Working Groups on Sunday prior to the conference. This will allow for collaborations and discussion with those interested in both groups as well as some integration that we would not have otherwise. After an hour long joint session, these groups will split back into their individual sessions. The Nuclear Security and Physical Protection Division also promises to have an interesting session involving an interactive tabletop exercise and discussion. For those of you primarily interested in this particular division, please don’t miss the opportunity to attend this session and participate in their exercise and future planning.
Since our last communication, the INMM Strategic Planning team, in conjunction with Kellen, our association management firm, has begun implementation of our strategic planning actions in earnest. Each objective has a responsible committee, Kellen staff member, and Executive Committee member and specific timelines. Therefore, we hope you begin to see immediate changes in terms of communication, outreach, membership, etc., for those of you that have participated in feedback surveys, we greatly appreciate your candid feedback as we continue to make the Institute the premier organization in the Nuclear Materials Management community. We certainly hope to see you in Indian Wells, California this July and look forward to the rich interactions, networking, and technical papers.

58th Annual Meeting News

The 58th INMM Annual Meeting is fast approaching, and we invite you to join us July 16-20, 2017, in Indian Wells, California, USA, to hear a great lineup of speakers who will address critical issues in our field. Your participation, interaction and input is part of what makes our annual meeting so beneficial to other attendees and to our industry as a whole.
You can register for the meeting now. We hope you can join us!
I also wanted to take a few moments and let you know the importance of your feedback following the meeting. Once the annual meeting ends, you will receive a link to fill out a survey to let us know what you liked and what needs to be changed for future meetings. We give careful consideration to your feedback, whether positive or negative, and we take actions to implement changes based on the comments we receive. Several years ago, for example, INMM discontinued offering food at the morning speakers’ breakfast, and many attendees provided feedback on this change. After reading the numerous responses, we took action the following year and again offered food at the speakers’ breakfast. Your feedback also shapes the annual meeting agenda, such as your suggestions for opening and closing plenary speakers at future meetings.
So this year when you receive the link to participate in the survey after the annual meeting, take a few minutes to respond. The Technical Program Committee and Executive Committee will carefully consider your suggestions when planning the next annual meeting. We really do appreciate your suggestions!

On 24 – 25 January 2017, the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) INMM student chapter held a two day workshop, “Fundamentals of Nuclear Security,” at the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT). The event was supported by the United States’ Department of State’s Partnership for Nuclear Security (PNS) through CRDF Global. About 50 students from 13 departments of ABU to participated in the workshop. Participants were provided with information on basics of atomic and nuclear processes; basics of nuclear reactor; nuclear fuel cycle; nuclear security, safety, and safeguard; insider threat overview; regulations of Nigerian nuclear and radiological facilities; Nigerian nuclear power program, nuclear security culture; human reliability program; roles of students in nuclear security program; and management and leadership in the nuclear industry.
The participants came from many departments within ABU including chemistry, biological science, computer science, political science, mass communication, and engineering departments. Participants valued the opportunity to learn more about nuclear related issues and network among the various disciplines in the university. ABU, is the only Nigerian university that houses a critical nuclear facility. Consequently, the issue of security is a top agenda of the University.
As a follow-up, our chapter intends to organize a tabletop exercise on insider threats mitigation, and integration of nuclear security culture with Nigerian cultural diversity. Our workshop participants will be randomly selected from various departments to partake in the exercise.
INMM Seeks New Communications Committee Chair
INMM is seeking applicants to fill the position of Communications Committee chair. Interested candidates should submit their resumes, expression of interest, and their vision for the position to INMM Headquarters at firstname.lastname@example.org by May 12, 2017
The Communications Committee is responsible for overseeing institutional communications between INMM leadership, its membership, and external communities, including the general public. In particular, the Committee produces the INMM Communicator online newsletter, reviews the content and functionality of the INMM website, and explores the development of new communication media. The Chair of the Communications Committee represents the Committee before the INMM Executive Committee (EC), initiates Committee business and sets its agenda, organizes the Committee, appoints the subcommittee chairs and provides leadership. The Chair serves and is appointed by the EC. Communications is a Standing Committee within the scope of the INMM Management Oversight chair.
The Chair provides a written summary report of status and recent activities to the EC three times per year; the July report is typically also included in the INMM report to the membership. The Chair is expected to attend the scheduled meetings of the EC in March, July, and November of each year. The Chair works closely with INMM Headquarters and serves in a critical advisory capacity. The Committee works closely with other units of INMM, including its Chapters and Technical Divisions. In addition to these responsibilities, the Chair of the Communications Committee oversees committee and staff work related to elements of INMM’s Strategic Plan. The Committee scope does not include the Journal of Nuclear Materials Management (JNMM), which is the responsibility of a wholly separate standing committee.
Currently, the Committee is organized into four subcommittees:
INMM Communicator: publishes a periodic online newsletter on INMM happenings and recent events...
Public Relations and Outreach: looks for opportunities and deals with issues involving INMM communications beyond its membership - to nuclear materials management professionals, nonprofit and government entities, as well as the general public.
Website: reviews the content and functionality of the INMM website to ensure its accuracy, relevance, usability, and timeliness. Reviews content of new and existing information and works with headquarters staff to identify the best website placement for information.
Social Media and Apps: provides guidance on the use of electronic communication tools by the Institute. Leads a team that produces, reviews, and publishes social media announcements and other postings.
