There are two types of Chapters within the INMM

  • Professional Chapters
  • Student Chapters

Professional Chapters

Professional chapters are associated with a geographical region, such as a country or sub-region. The current list of chapters and points of contact are on the INMM website.

Student Chapters

Student chapters are associated with a particular school or collection of schools, and must adhere to requirements of the school(s) for approved activities. INMM does not require a minimum GPA, or a code of conduct; however, the school may have these additional requirements. Students may also be members of other organizations, such as the American Nuclear Society or the American Physical Society. It is recommended that Student Chapters be mentored by a Professional Chapter to assist with Chapter activities.

Purpose of a Chapter

The purpose of a chapter is to foster, promote, and further the purposes and objectives of the INMM. Those are to advance nuclear materials management, promote research in this field, establish standards, improve the qualifications and usefulness of those employed in this field, and increases and disseminates information of nuclear materials management. All INMM members are encouraged to get involved in chapter activities, including:

a.    Dinner and luncheon meetings
b.    Technical programs
c.    Tours of facilities
d.    Guest speakers

Chapter members typically (but are not required to) live in the same geographical area of the Chapter. Requirements of Active Chapters, Inactive Chapters and Formation of Chapters are listed in a separate section below.

While the parent INMM organization is incorporated, individual Chapters are not required to be incorporated. INMM carries liability insurance but it does not extend to the Chapters. Chapters are not required to carry insurance. Chapters are encouraged to have a Chapter Website with a link to the INMM website

The INMM annual budget currently provides for a $500 annual stipend for each Chapter, made available upon request. Chapters may also request funding from the parent organization to support special Chapter initiatives. Chapters are allowed to charge dues. Each chapter can decide if all members are required to join INMM or if Associate Members (not members of INMM) are allowed.

Customary officers are President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. In some situations, the latter two positions are combined into one. The Chapter President is required to be an INMM Member. The Chapter Charter may require that all Chapter Officers be INMM Members. A person serves as an officer typically for one to two years, depending on the Chapter Bylaws. Chapter officers are not paid. Chapter elections must be open, fair, and comply with the provisions in the Chapter Bylaws. Election of officers should be held annually. For continuity purposes, half the EC members-at-large should be elected each year with 2-year terms of office.

The Chapter Relations Committee and Committee Chair assist members with the process of establishing new INMM chapters, helps answer questions and resolve issues from the chapters, and promotes good communications and relationships among the chapters and with the EC. Chapter annual financial reports are reviewed by the INMM Treasurer and Chapter business meeting minutes and periodic reports are reviewed by the Chapter Relations Committee Chair. INMM Headquarters Staff provides to the Chapter a list of members in the Chapter's geographical area and responds to simple information requests. Other support and services are available but may require payment of a fee. The current list of chapters is available on the website. Points of contact and Chapter Bylaws are in the Members Only section of the INMM website.

Formation of a Chapter

Formation of a new INMM chapter requires that seven INMM members that either reside in or are employed within a geographical area for which the Chapter is proposed, or seven INMM student members from a particular school for which the Student Chapter is proposed, submit a Petition for a New Chapter and their proposed Chapter Bylaws to the INMM EC. Upon approval of the Petition and Bylaws, the Chapter is approved. Chapters may choose to have their own Operations Manual. Templates for a Petition and Chapter Bylaws are available on the website. Amendments to the Chapter Bylaws are approved by both the Chapter Members and the INMM EC.
