Purpose of a Chapter
What is the purpose of a chapter?
To foster, promote, and further the purposes and objectives of the INMM. Those are to advance nuclear materials management, promote research in this field, establish standards, improve the qualifications and usefulness of those employed in this field, and increase and disseminate information of nuclear materials management.
Forming a Chapter
How do we form a chapter?
There are two items required to form a chapter: A petition and a set of proposed bylaws. The petition and bylaws must submitted to the INMM Executive Committee, which has the authority to authorize the formation of a chapter. The petition must be from seven (7) INMM members that either reside in or are employed within a geographical area for which the chapter is proposed. For student chapters, the seven (7) INMM members must be comprised of one (1) tenured (or tenured-track) professor plus six (6) students from a particular school for which the student chapter is proposed. Upon approval of the petition and bylaws by the INMM Executive Committee, the chapter may be formed. Both the petition and bylaws should be emailed to INMM headquarters at firstname.lastname@example.org.

For student chapters, the seven (7) INMM members must be comprised of one (1) tenured (or tenured-track) professor plus six (6) students from a particular school for which the student chapter is proposed.
What are chapters required to do?
Chapters are required to have at least one business meeting each year and submit the minutes of each business meeting to the Chapter Relations Committee Chair and Secretary of the INMM with a copy to INMM HQ. An annual financial report must be submitted to the INMM Treasurer copying INMM HQ. Periodic reports may be requested for INMM Executive Committee meetings, normally held in March, July, and November each year. Are chapter members all required to live in the same area?
Chapter members live and/or work in the geographical area of the chapter.
Is a chapter required to be incorporated?
No. The parent INMM organization is incorporated.
Are chapters required to have an operations manual?
No. Chapters may choose to have an operations manual.
Are chapters required to have a website?
No. They are encouraged to have a chapter website with a link to the INMM web site.
Are chapters required to carry insurance?
No. INMM carries liability insurance but it does not extend to the chapters.
Can a chapter lose active status?
Yes. If a chapter does not fulfill the Chapter Requirements, the Inactive Chapter Procedure will be initiated.
How do student chapter rules differ from professional chapters?
There are no differences other than a student chapter is associated with a school and a professional chapter is associated with a geographical area.
Are student chapters required to be associated with a professional chapter?
No. A student chapter may be associated with a professional chapter if there is mutual interest.
Are student chapters required to have a faculty advisor?
This is not an INMM requirement, but may be a school requirement.
Is a minimum GPA required for student chapter membership?
This is not an INMM requirement, but may be a school requirement.
Must I major in a particular field to be a student chapter member?
This is not a student chapter requirement. However, a student member should be in a field of study that professionally supports nuclear materials management in a technical or administrative manner.
Is there a code of conduct for student members?
There is not an INMM code of conduct, but the school may have one.
Can I be a student member of both INMM and ANS?
Yes. Students are encouraged to explore a variety of nuclear careers.
Who must approve student members?
The INMM Membership Committee must approve all prospective member applications.
Is there an age requirement for student members?
There is not an INMM age requirement.
Can there be international student chapters?
Meetings and Activities
How often must a chapter meet?
A minimum of once each calendar year.
Does the parent organization provide speakers for chapter meetings?
The INMM parent organization encourages individual members to support chapter meetings on a voluntary basis.
Are chapters supposed to coordinate their activities?
Coordination and communication are encouraged but not required.
Are there special chapter activities at the INMM Annual Meeting?
Each year at the INMM annual meeting the chapter presidents hold a business luncheon to share experiences and ideas.
What are the requirements to be a chapter member?
This is a decision for the chapter; chapter membership requirements are included in the chapter bylaws.
Must chapter members belong to the parent organization?
This is a decision for the chapter. Some chapters require this and others allow Associate Members that belong only to the chapter.
If I am a member of INMM, am I automatically a member of a chapter?
No, unless you live or work in the geographical area of a chapter or are associated with a school having a student chapter.
Is there an age requirement for membership?
Dues and Funding
Are chapters allowed to charge dues?
Yes. Some chapters charge dues but some do not.
Are chapter members required to pay dues?
Yes, if the chapter bylaws require this.
Does the parent organization provide funds to the chapter?
The INMM annual budget currently provides for a $400 annual stipend for each chapter, made available upon request. Chapters may also request funding from the parent organization to support special chapter initiatives. To request funds for workshops or other events, review the INMM Workshop Guide.
Can chapters have their own Sustaining Members?
Yes. Chapters are encouraged to develop their own funding sources.
Officers and Duties
What officers are required for a chapter?
As prescribed in each chapter's bylaws, the customary officers are President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. In some cases the latter two positions are combined into one.
Are chapter officers required to be INMM members?
The chapter president is required to be an INMM Member. The chapter charter may require this for other officers. This is encouraged by the parent organization.
How long can a person serve as an officer?
This is dependent on the chapter bylaws. One or two years are typical for a given office.
Are chapter officers paid?
No. INMM is an all volunteer organization, except for the parent organization's association management contractor.
What are the requirements for a chapter executive committee?
This is dependent on the chapter bylaws.
How long can a person serve as an executive committee member?
This is dependent on the chapter bylaws. One or two years are typical.
What are the requirements for elections?
Chapter elections must be open, fair, and comply with the provisions in the chapter bylaws.
How often must elections be held?
Annually. For continuity purposes, half the executive committee members-at-large should be elected each year with 2-year terms of office.
Constitution and Bylaws
Is a chapter required to have its own chapter constitution and bylaws?
Yes, either a constitution and bylaws or a single document called Chapter Bylaws.

Who must approve the chapter bylaws?
Initially, the INMM Executive Committee. Amendments to the chapter bylaws are approved by the chapter members and the INMM Executive Committee.

Relationship to Parent Organization
What are the chapter reporting requirements to the parent organization?
Business meeting minutes and periodic reports are provided to the Chapter Relations Committee Chair and the Secretary of INMM, and an annual financial report must be submitted to the INMM Treasurer.
Who is the contact for chapters in the parent organization?
Chapter contacts include the INMM President, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Committee Chair, and the Chapter Relations Committee Chair.
What are the roles of the Chapter Relations Committee Chair?
The Chapter Relations Committee and Committee Chair assists members with the process of establishing new INMM chapters, helps answer questions and resolve issues from the chapters, and promotes good communications and relationships among the chapters and with the Executive Committee.
Can chapters get support from the parent organization headquarters staff?
Yes. Headquarters staff provides to the chapter a list of members in the chapter's geographical area and responds to simple information requests. Other support and services are available but may require payment of a fee.
Are chapter financial records audited by the parent organization?
No. However, chapter annual financial reports are reviewed by the INMM Treasurer and chapter business meeting minutes and periodic reports are reviewed by the Chapter Relations Committee Chair
Can chapters nominate candidates for officers and members-at-large for the parent organization?
Yes, chapters may, and are encouraged to, suggest names to the INMM Nominating Committee of candidates for election.
Do chapter members receive a discount for annual meeting registration?
No. There may be other discounts available, such as student, emeritus, and sustaining member discounts.
Are student member applications reviewed by the parent organization Membership Committee?
