On Friday, January 12, the Southwest Chapter hosted its 7 th Annual Winter Dinner at The Lodge in Santa Fe. Mr. Ken Baker, Principal Assistant Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation at NNSA, was our invited guest speaker, and provided a very informative and interesting talk. Despite bad weather, we had a record turnout of 56 people. Mr. Baker also elected to combine his trip with technical visits to Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratories. This had two positive effects: 1) the home institutions for many of us were given a powerful example of the benefits of supporting and collaborating with the INMM, and 2) the Southwest Chapter was not requested to pay his travel costs, as it was a business trip for Mr. Baker. The SW Chapter, LANL and SNL are very appreciative of Charlie Harmon’s hard work to bring Mr. Baker out here.

The SW Chapter continues to actively support the Nonproliferation & Arms Control Division in preparation of the Reducing the Risk from Radiological and Nuclear Materials workshop to be held March 21-22, 2007. This quarter, our support has included identification and selection of the workshop venue (La Fonda Hotel, Santa Fe), negotiation and signing of a contract that included federal per diem room rates for a 70-room block, aggressively marketing the workshop to our home institutions as well as local commercial entities (Ludlum Instruments, Thermo Fischer, and MCT Industries), development of the sponsorship form, and raising sponsorship dollars from our home institutions as well as others. Our active recruitment of sponsors is responsible for raising the sponsorship levels from $2000.00 (as budgeted) to $5250.00 (to date). We are also providing four SW Chapter EC members as volunteers for the workshop, including Dan Miller, our Treasurer, as the financial point-of-contact for La Fonda.

The Chapter is beginning advance preparations for the 9 th Annual Technical Meeting in Taos, New Mexico in May.
Respectfully submitted,
Johnna B. Marlow, SW INMM President
