About the INMM

The Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) promotes research and development in new concepts, approaches, techniques and equipment in the fields of nuclear materials management (i.e., safeguards, transportation, and waste management). Members of the Institute have opportunities to participate in the advancement of effective nuclear materials management through technical paper presentations, technical division and committee participation and standards development.

The INMM provides an ideal forum for interacting with the international nuclear materials management community at the industry and government levels.  The Institute also encourages the improvement of the qualifications of those engaged in nuclear materials management through high standards of professional ethics, education and performance and the recognition of those who meet such standards.

The INMM is a nonprofit, international, professional organization that includes managers, engineers, scientists and technicians dedicated to providing assurance that nuclear materials are properly protected, managed, handled, stored and used for purposes approved by treaty or law.

The INMM was formed in 1958 as a scientific and educational organization committed to advancing the quality of nuclear material practices worldwide, including the application of the principles of accounting, auditing, mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, engineering, and physical protection to the safeguarding of nuclear fuel and nuclear facilities.

Since it was formed, the mission of the INMM has been expanded from the original safeguards issues to include waste management, packaging and transportation, materials control and accountability, physical protection, international safeguards and nonproliferation and arms control.  The Institute also develops, prepares and distributes standards that are consistent with existing professional and regulatory requirements.

The INMM is composed of six technical divisions:  International Safeguards, Material Control and Accountability, Nonproliferation and Arms Control, Physical Protection, Packaging and Transportation, and Waste Management.  Each technical division is the focal point for information and activities related to its specialty.

Regional Chapters

Regional chapters of the Institute further the purpose and objectives of the Institute by providing a less formal forum for the discussion of regional nuclear management and safeguards issues.  Active chapters within the Institute are the Central, Northeast, Pacific Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest chapters in the United States, and the Japan, Korea, Obninsk, Russian Federation, Ukraine and Urals and the Vienna chapters.  All members of the Institute are encouraged to become involved in regional chapter activities.
