January 2006
Member News
For INMM, 2005 will be remembered as the year that we entered a new era. The significant characteristic of this new era is not an explosion of new members, because we first saw that trend develop about two years ago. What we saw in 2005 was an explosion of student members. And that development is very satisfying to many members who have been actively working for several years to address the “graying of the Institute.”
While I still feel like I should be one of the “young members," I have had to accept the fact for several years that I was contributing to the Institute’s “graying” myself. Consequently, I am pleased to see the large number of students who are becoming interested in the Institute and desire to be involved in accomplishing its goals.
As you may have heard, our first student chapter was introduced at the Annual Meeting this year, and, if things continue on their current path, there will be one or more additional student chapters to add at the 2006 meeting.
We have had a significant number of new members, both regular and student, since the last issue of the Communicator. The names of the 43 members have joined since September can be found at the end of this column.
Without question, the most significant benefit to you as a member of INMM is the opportunity to interact with others in the profession and to publicize your own accomplishments through participation in the Annual Meeting.
If you have never attended, the INMM Annual Meeting brings together more than 500 of the world’s foremost scientists, engineers, government officials and policy makers in all aspects of nuclear materials management. Not only are participants given the opportunity to exchange ideas, they are also invited to assist in the formation of policies and approaches to nuclear materials management based on their own experiences.
I certainly recommend that you make plans to attend the meeting in Nashville in 2006, but more importantly, I urge you to consider submitting a paper of your own in order to benefit the rest of us with your own knowledge. And, my annual reminder: be sure to tell your colleagues that in order to attend the meeting at the reduced member rate, they must join by April 16, 2006.
One of the benefits that we have offered for the past several years is being discontinued. As you may know, several years ago we introduced an “E-Group” for INMM members, in which members were encouraged to interact on a more regular basis than only once per year at the Annual Meeting.
While we had some initial interest and in fact facilitated some crucial interaction early on, we have not seen any real interest in the past year. Because the E-Group does not appear to be useful to the membership, we are discontinuing the service.
However, we remain dedicated to providing mechanisms for our membership to interact on a regular basis, and if you have any thoughts on other ways that we might do this, we would love to hear your suggestions.
I welcome news about any INMM member, including yourself. Keep us informed by sending any items of interest to either me at scott.vance@pillsburylaw.com or our Communicator Editor, Sara Pozzi at pozzisa@ornl.gov. Please include photographs when possible.
