Welcome to the August 2008 issue of the INMM Communicator!

The 49th INMM annual meeting has just ended in Nashville. It was a great meeting where our members and others in the nuclear materials management field meet to exchange ideas, renew fellowship and friendship, and mentor and train students. We also had a great joint meeting with the American Nuclear Society, the ANS-INMM 8th International Conference on Facility Operations-Safeguards Interface, in Portland, Ore., from March 30-April 4, 2008. This was a meeting of international safeguards experts that allowed a superb exchange of information amongst the safeguards community that I can attest has helped us to further the aims of the Nonproliferation Treaty.

This is my first issue as the editor of the Communicator. I am looking forward to continuing to produce as fine editions as Sara Pozzi has ably done.

In this issue of the Communicator, we have a piece from Chris Pickett, chair of the INMM Material Control and Accountancy Division, who tells us about what’s new in his division.

As in every issue of the Communicator, we have Member News, by Grace Thompson, our Membership Committee chair. A special welcome to all the new INMM members; their names are listed in Grace’s piece.

Before closing, I would like to note that at the Annual Meeting we had a huge contingent of students from universities and the national labs. We at Los Alamos brought about a dozen students, many from Texas A&M, which has worked with Los Alamos to develop new young safeguards professionals. INMM members mentored the students and we more mature members really enjoyed the intelligence, enthusiasm and youthful energy these students took to Nashville. We hope to continue this effort at Tucson next year.

In this issue, learn about:

I am planning to put columns from a student or two in coming editions to highlight their efforts and keep us older professionals on our toes and infused with hope for the future of our profession.

I look forward to hearing from you. The Communications Committee is still looking for volunteers: drop me a line at bboyer@lanl.gov.
