Welcome to the May 2005 issue of the INMM Communicator! The Institute’s primary activity, the annual meeting, is coming up in a few weeks time. We will meet at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge in Phoenix, Ariz., July 10-14.

I assume you are all hard at work on your papers, and that you are well aware of the June 10 deadline for the final papers. Remember that the names of delinquent authors will be posted on the infamous “black list” that is kept every year by Technical Program Chair Charles Pietri! (For those who may not be familiar with this INMM tradition, delinquent authors are those who have failed to provide a paper for the INMM Annual Meeting by the deadline).

Please take a moment to read our annual meeting preview, which you will find in this issue of the Communicator.

Some suggestions for delivering an excellent oral presentation are provided in two articles by INMM Fellow Paul Ebel in the Communicator Archives. See Tips for Speakers in this issue of the Communicator.

This year, INMM speakers are encouraged to use PowerPoint presentations for their talks.

I am very happy to announce that INMM has its first student chapter, which was formed at Texas A&M University. Read all about it in a piece by Mark Leek, chair of the Students Activities Committee. Students and other interested annual meeting attendees are invited to attend a meeting that concerns student participation in the INMM. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 13 from 7.30 to 9 pm.

Read about the INMM’s news in a column by INMM Vice President, Nancy Jo Nicholas, Inside Insights. The number of INMM members continues to grow with every issue of the Communicator, and I welcome all the new members. Their names are listed in Member News, Membership Committee Chair Scott Vance’s regular column.

It is an exciting time for professionals in the field of nuclear material management. The challenges ahead call for excellence in science and technology development. The exchange of ideas and technical information is an essential part of our work, and our institute has a leading role in this respect. I look forward to meeting many of you in Phoenix in July!
