Job Description

The Detection Systems Group (DS) at PNNL seeks recent graduates of a Ph.D. program to contribute to their programs in applied nuclear physics for nuclear treaty support and national security and homeland security applications. Strong analytical skills, good writing and presentation skills and the ability to work in cross-disciplinary teams are required for the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years from an accredited college or university.

Qualifications

Must be able to obtain a security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.

An opening exists for a radiation detection experimentalist to support radiation detector design, assembly and testing. The successful candidate should have a background in Nuclear Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Radiation Chemistry or Radiation Health Physics. The focus of this position will be on building, testing, and operating multi-coincidence detectors for use in laboratory and field environments. This position requires a strong technical background in nuclear physics/engineering and experience with the building, troubleshooting and operation of complex detector systems. In addition, experience analyzing radioactive decay chains, evaluating production and sources of radioactive materials, and experimental radiation detection design and construction. Prior experience with gamma spectroscopy analysis and commercial analysis software is an advantage as well as a working knowledge of C++, Matlab and/or ROOT.

Preferred Education/Credential

PhD in nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, or related field.

This position requires the ability to obtain a federal security clearance in a timely manner. Which requires:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 consecutive months can be demonstrated.

Job Description

The Detection Systems Group (DS) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory seeks a recent graduate of a Ph.D. program for a postdoctoral position contributing to programs in applied nuclear physics for nuclear treaty support and national security applications. The selected candidate will collaborate with staff and other post-graduate researchers on both theoretical and experimental studies related to nuclear explosion monitoring for treaty verification activities. These efforts will span source characterization, reactor physics, environmental fate and transport, environmental sampling methodology, and interpretation of the results of sample analysis. Source characterization and reactor physics will include nuclear fission and neutron activation from natural and anthropogenic events. Environmental transport will focus on gas migration through geologic media, but may also include atmospheric transport. Investigation of sampling methodology will consider the optimization of the collection of isotopes of interest. Work in these efforts is aimed at expanding the scientific basis for interpretation tools in nuclear explosion monitoring.

The work will be done in laboratory, field, and virtual environments.

U.S. citizenship required, position requires the ability to obtain a future Q security clearance.

The successful candidate should have a background in Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics, or Radiochemistry. Nuclear physics modeling and environmental gas migration simulation will make up a large component of this position. Past research experience with MCNP, ORIGEN, CINDER and/or similar nuclear physics modeling software is strongly desired, while at least a working familiarity would be considered essential. Prior experience with numerical Bateman equations, evaluation of the production and source of radioactive materials as well as experimental radiation detection are advantageous. Additionally, familiarity with one of more of the following technical areas would be considered highly ideal and should be noted in the position application: environmental fate and transport, nuclear waste remediation, atmospheric transport, hydrology, as well as the more general areas of petroleum engineering and geoscience. Working knowledge of C++, Python, Perl, Matlab and/or any other numerical and statistical analysis coding software is also advantageous.

This position will entail a high-degree of cross-disciplinary research both on small and large project teams. The successful candidate should, therefore, be capable of functioning in a fluid environment both in well-defined roles as part of a team and sometimes in more self-directed, individual capacities. Strong writing and presentation skills will be required. As this position will focus on highly analytical and sometimes theoretical as well as abstract work, the ability to effectively communicate such ideas at various levels of technical detail is essential.
